What is a self-priming wastewater pump?

Self-priming water pump; It is one of the pump types known as self-priming wastewater pump, self-priming pump or jet pump. Self-priming pumps are not generally used as widely as centrifugal pumps or submersible pumps, but they are one of the most important pump types in terms of usage areas. Self-priming wastewater pumps are used to discharge water from deep and shallow wells. As we mentioned at the beginning of our article, they are also known as jet pumps or sprayer pumps. Self-priming pumps work flawlessly. So much so that they can make a perfect suction in conditions where the water is cloudy or even bubbly.

Working principle of self-priming pump

Self-priming pumps are usually mounted “at ground level” above the liquid source. Therefore, a substructure is needed to install self-priming pumps. They are easier to access as they are at ground level. Thus, maintenance and repair can be easier. The first thing to consider in the working principle of self-priming pumps is the selection of the right type of pump; such as fuel pumps for fuel applications, solids treatment pumps for wastewater applications. In a self-priming pump, the casing is filled with liquid, which is usually the same liquid to be pumped. When the propeller rotates in the housing, a low pressure area is created in the chamber of the propeller. Because the pressure is lower than the atmosphere, it pushes all the air in the suction pipe into the pump. The self-priming pump mixes the air with the circulating water in the enclosure. The air is separated from the liquid and evacuated from the housing. When all the air in the suction line is displaced, the pump is dynamic and flows like other centrifugal pumps. One of the most important advantages of self-priming pumps is the possibility of making suction by keeping the pump outside, without the need to use a submersible pump.
