FM Approval

FM is essentially an abbreviation for “Factory Mutual”. FMI, which has the function of insuring private risks, is known as a free agency that approves various products or systems. FM approval is an extremely important detail in fire equipment, especially pumps. Because FM approvals are obtained directly by considering NFPA standards. FM is one of the most demanding quality approvals. The fact that it is a completely independent organization is technically a situation that makes FM reliable.

As it will be accepted, the most important fire extinguishing equipment is sprinkler, both in Turkey and in many countries of the world. UL and FM approval is strictly required for the sprinkler known as the sprinkler system. Apart from these two approvals, VDS approval is also requested. UL or FM approval allows you to differentiate the market. It will be remembered that even in the state tender conditions, which are very important and comprehensive, articles on this subject are created. More serious impositions on UL and FM approval have been encountered lately. Depending on technical file costs and other expenses, the budget for FM/UL approval may differ.

Setting universal standards for product safety, UL/FM is independent and therefore reassuring. It is known that around 7200 manufacturers use nearly 25 million Underwrites Laboratories branded products throughout the year. FMI insures private or major risks. It also gives performance approval to materials or systems. Being an independent technical platform increases trust in it. Under normal circumstances, FM approval for fire pumps is given in accordance with NFPA 20; however, in some cases there are some demands beyond NFPA 20. For this reason, FM approval is considered to be the most difficult and most comprehensive approval for environmental elements or fire pumps.

In order to have technical knowledge about FM/UL and to manage the process correctly, it is necessary to know NFPA first. NFPA, the American National Fire Protection Agency, is the organization that determines the fire safety conditions and standards required to be implemented in the United States. Many equipment in Turkey also function in full compliance with NFPA standards.
